Dual-Cavity MRI Breast Phantom

An MRI phantom is a verification device, typically representing a human body part. It’s used to evaluate, analyze, and tune the performance of an MRI scanner and RF coils.

A small but complicated rotationally-molded MRI phantom. It is a hermetically sealed, fluid-filled low-density polyethylene vessel. The phantom has two cavities; one filled with a saline solution, the other with mineral oil. At the centre is a plastic plate machined with a pattern of high precision cut-outs.

Like all MRI phantoms and coils, it has to be completely free of metal fragments.

Phantom Components

  1. Cover - machined LDPE plate permanently welded onto phantom body
  2. Resolution Plate - made with cutouts of various size and shape which are used as targets during scanning
  3. Phantom Body - rotationally-molded LDPE main component of the phantom
  4. Outer Cavity - can be filled with a salt water solution (manganous chloride 4-Hydrate, sodium chloride, water) or oil
  5. Inner Cavity - can be filled with a salt water solution (manganous chloride 4-Hydrate, sodium chloride, water) or oil
